Starting therapy—whether as a client or a counselor—can be both exciting and terrifying.
In this candid reflection, I share the sheer panic of seeing my very first client as a new therapist, from obsessing over pillow placement to Googling what to say in an initial session (spoiler: Google doesn’t have suggestions for panicked therapists - Google apparently thinks that we know what we’re doing).
Ultimately, I learned that the most important thing in the counseling room isn’t having all the right answers—it’s showing up with presence, compassion, and authenticity.
